Blog #1 About Me
To start off, I am from New Bedford, Ma. I've lived there my entire life and luckily in the same house. I've never had to move which I am thankful for. I grew up through the public school system which was rough at times but in the end made me a stronger person. What exactly brought me to social work is a tricky question. I was struggling during my first two years at BSU to find a program I enjoyed, and I had no idea what career path I wanted to follow. So I decided to take a couple of intro social work classes for the fun of it and found them to be extremely insightful and captivating to the point that I actually decided to apply to the program. I find social work practice with communities and organizations to be extremely helpful to the participants of these programs. I think teens especially are more apt to succeed in community programs and various organizations because they are able to be in a social and productive environment that is geared toward their needs. I hope to learn the fundamentals of social work regarding macro proactice. I have a limited experience in working in these types of settings so I have a lot to learn in general on the topic.
I feel the components that make up a good class are: A good professor that is open minded and has creative and interesting ways to teach a group of college students, peers that respect others and can equally contribute to class discussions, and assignments that are relative to the material and are at least somewhat interesting to complete.
If I could have any magical power it would be the ability to fly. Four interesting things about myself: I use to model, I am a substitute teacher for New Bedford Public Schools, I know how to wakeboard, and snowboard, and I use to be on the golf team in high school.
For fun I enjoy reading and stumbling upon new authors. Once I find a new author I like I will read all of their books before moving on to another author. During the winter months I enjoy taking trips up north to go snowboarding. During the spring, summer, and fall, I like to go for long walks, go boating, horseback riding, and hiking. I find it challenging to try to pick up new activities and sports so this summer I am actually planning on getting into painting.
If I could solve one major social problem it would be domestic violence against women. There's nothing that upsets me more than a man beating on a woman. Domestic violence is probably one of the most prevalent social issues in today's society and I feel that more needs to be done in regards to laws in order to better protect women.
My dream job right now would be a juvenile probation officer. This is what I am currently doing for my internship this year and I absolutely love it. The job is not just about checking up on kids and making sure they're doing what they're supposed to. It's about talking to them and trying to get them involved in the community in positive ways. As a probation officer I have been able to get more involved with organizations and programs within the community than any other social work position I have experienced thus far. Not only that but I also am able to get involved with the juveniles and their families. Overall I have found the job to be interesting and rewarding.
